Greater Peninsula Swimming Association (GPSA)
GPSA is a recreational summer swim league comprised of 18 teams across the Virginia Peninsula. Our mission is to provide children with the opportunity to learn competitive swimming, sportsmanship, and team camaraderie, all while enjoying a fun and healthy summer activity!
Season Overview
Our season typically begins in mid-June and features a structured, competitive environment:
- Divisions: Our 18 teams are divided into three divisions: Red, White, and Blue.
- Dual Meets: Teams compete in biweekly dual meets within their respective divisions throughout the summer.
- The Finale: The season culminates in late July or early August with two distinct championship-style events.
Pre-Season Preparation
J. Kyle Hurdle Swim Clinic
Get ready for the summer by refining your strokes at our annual J. Kyle Hurdle Swim Clinic, held before the official start of the regular season. Open to all GPSA swimmers and the local community, this instructional clinic provides expert coaching to help athletes sharpen their technique, build confidence, and kick off the summer on the right block.
Beyond in-water preparation, the clinic serves as the primary fundraiser for the J. Kyle Hurdle Scholarship. This annual award honors the memory of a former GPSA and U.S. Naval Academy swimmer, providing college scholarships to outstanding graduating league seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Post-Season Championships
We wrap up the summer with two major events designed to celebrate the progress of every athlete in the league.
Summer Splash Invitational
In the GPSA, we believe every swimmer deserves a milestone moment. While the league year culminates in several ways, Summer Splash serves as the definitive championship-style season finale for the majority of our league. It’s the day to shave time and see your hard work pay off on the big stage, with medals awarded to the top 8 in every event.

City Meet
City Meet is our premier end-of-season championship meet, held on a Saturday in late July or early August. Swimmers who have earned qualifying times during the regular season compete against the top athletes from all 18 GPSA teams at a single venue.
